Tablet

Some reps take issue with a GPS in a company issued tablet. From a management and business perspective, it is needed to track employee productivity, scheduling, or tracking lost or stolen tablets. From an employee perspective it's an invasion of privacy and big brother behaivor.

Either way, I had a few sales guys in Baltimore for the past few weeks and during the Baltimore, MD protests and riots. My manager didn't want to leave or stop selling to give it time to settle down. Everything was going according to plan until a lady with her child asked for a ride to get where they were going. He obliged as it didn't seem too out of the ordinary because of the circumstances around him and as he opened the door he got hit from behind by a blunt object in the legs. He laid clutching his legs and someone jumped in the car (with the women and her child) and they drove off in his car.

He called the next day after going to the emergency room and filling out police paperwork to file a report for a stolen automobile. I had loaned him money for the car and after I knew he was OK, I was concerned that money was gone. I asked if he had insurance to cover a stolen vehicle and he laughed and said hell no, I only have the basic insurance, that care is gone.

Come to find out, one of our employees tracked the tablet, found the last known address and our manager and one of his guys went to that location. Low and behold, the car was there. The thiefs turned it on but must have gotten spooked because of the custom software and realized it didn't have much street value. They took personal items but the business tablet was left, sitting inside the car. They jumped in and drove off. The tablet found the car the next day and allowed them to get back to selling quickly.
